The Paul Hirst Room, 10 Gower St
Martin Saar (Professor of Political Theory, University of Leipzig)
Thinking about Democracy through Spinoza
Martin Saar will speak about the relevance of Spinoza’s philosophy to contemporary democratic theory. Drawing on his recent book, Die Immanenz der Macht. Politische Theorie nach Spinoza (Suhrkamp, 2013), and on a paper in English, ‘The Immanence of Power: From Spinoza to Radical Democracy’, he will argue that Spinoza’s most significant contribution to current democratic theory lies, not in his conception of democracy as a form of government, but in his broader interpretation of what a democracy is.
This will be an informal workshop with two commentators and general discussion. If you know you’ll be coming please email Susan James (firstname.lastname@example.org) or just come along on the day.
